Tell us about SkinnyChef.com.
Skinnychef.com is a blog that empowers people to take a greater role in their health by cooking delicious meals at home.
When did you start your blog?
2003 when I decided to go to culinary school to follow my dream to become a chef.
How many hours a week do you spend on your site?
I work about 10 hours weekly
Average monthly profit?
My average monthly profit is $1000
Average monthly visitors?
Skinnychef.com gets about 100,000 average monthly visitors
How did/do you grow your visitors?
Most of my visitors come for free recipes and blogs attract them, I write a lot of seasonal posts as well that get a good amount of traffic.
How long did it take to have your 1st $1000. month?
It took me a few years to start earning $1000 monthly, when I realized that my blog was really just a hub for free info and free recipes. I always had my book for sale on the site, but people weren’t buying the book. Why should they, when they had over 200 recipes free on the site!
How do you monetize your blog?
I do make some income from ads but that’s not the bulk of where my earnings come from. I realized that if I could do interactive meal plans, provide nutritional data, and add simple cooking video I could monetize blog by offering a healthy eating program that was easy to create from resources I already had. So that’s when I started the “200 Calorie Fix” that’s attached to my blog. It’s a membership site that focuses on meals for one, each meal is only 200 calories and it’s a decent sized portion!
I also added additional content to like healthy cooking tips, info about superfoods, and easy video that I did in my own kitchen to teach people basic restaurant technique that I learned working in NYC kitchen. Some of the content was reorganized from blogs I had already written.
Share one thing you would do differently.
If I could have started over, I would have starting my healthy eating plan years ago and rolled a lot more content into it. I would have offered my blogs as little teasers of some of the great stuff that’s in the program. When starting a blog you should always have something for people to buy, beyond books. I’ll be starting a “Skinny Chef Gift shop” soon on the site that will also feature my new line of cooking sauces, “Skinny Chef Superfood Sauces”.
